Terras Gauda was founded in the O Rosal subzone in Rías Baixas in 1989 by José María Fonseca. The name "Terras Gauda" reflects the ancient Suebi kingdom’s term for the region, combined with the Latin word gaudium, meaning joy. Winemakers Pepe and Luis Hidalgo consulted during the winery’s launch, and today Emilio Rodríguez is in charge of winemaking. Unlike many Rías Baixas wineries founded by outsiders, Terras Gauda has grown beyond Galicia and acquired wineries in Bierzo, Ribera del Duero, and Rioja. Today, José María Fonseca’s children, Carmen and Antón, are progressively taking on leadership roles in managing the winery group.
The Wines
Terras Gauda — Albariño, Caíño Blanco, and Loureiro from the As Eiras and Tabagón vineyards. Grapes are cold-soaked, then fermented with indigenous yeasts in stainless steel and aged on the lees before bottling.
Abadía de San Campio — 100% Albariño from the As Eiras and Tabagón vineyards. Grapes are cold-soaked, then fermented with indigenous yeasts in stainless steel and aged on the lees for at least three months.
La Mar de Terras Gauda — Mostly Caíño Blanco from younger (~20 year old) vines. Cold-soaked for six hours, then fermented in stainless steel and aged for two months after fermentation, followed by six months on the lees in stainless steel.
Terras Gauda Etiqueta Negra — Albariño, Caíño Blanco, and Loureiro from the As Eiras and Tabagón vineyards. Alcoholic and malolactic fermentation take place in barrels, with bâtonnage twice weekly in foudres. Aged on the lees for five months in barrels and nine months in 1,500-liter foudres.
