What is Garnacha Tintureira?

Garnacha tintorera is more widely known as alicante bouschet, and is distributed across the Iberian Peninsula. It was widely valued in Galicia for making strong, deeply-colored alcoholic wines.

In general, wines are very aromatic with concentrated aromas of red fruit like cherries and plums that give way to hints of spice.

What does Garnacha Tintureira taste like?

Wines tend to be full-bodied, with good structure from their high alcohol and acidity. They tend to have jammy blue and black fruit flavors with hearty, earthy undertones.

Where does Garnacha Tintureira come from?

Also known as Alicante Bouschet, this grape originated in France when Henri Bouschet crossed Petit Bouschet and Garnacha in 1855. From there, it spread to the Alentejo in Portugal, California, and several regions in Spain. Garnacha tintorera was widely planted in Galicia after phylloxera for its deep color and high yields, both of which were valued by quantity-over-quality subsistence winemaking.
