Fillaboa is located in the Condado do Tea subzone of Rías Baixas. It’s owned by the Masaveu group, which also has properties in Castilla-León, Rioja, and Asturias.
Its name comes from a local legend with similarities to the story of Cinderella. The good daughter (filla boa, in Galician) of a local count was mistreated by her evil sisters, but ultimately inherited all her father’s lands. The estate has held a winery for several centuries, but the modern operation didn’t come into being until DO Rías Baixas was founded in the late 1980s.
In 2001, the winery was purchased by the Asturian Masaveu family, who had made their fortune in banking. Their purchase of a winery in Rías Baixas was one of the first precursors out outside investment in the region and seen as a sign that the region could be attractive to outside investors. The Masaveu group added vineyards to the original 32 hectares and modernized the winery facilities.
